Tweaking the WSDL File by Hand

When you build a web service that you created from scratch, a WSDL file is created. The WSDL file describes the external interface of the web service. You may need to tweak or post-process the WSDL file that is created for you by the IDE.

tip  For simple web services and web service clients, tweaking is generally unnecessary because the IDE provides a tailor-made WSDL file for you. Only for more complex web service interaction is tweaking of a WSDL file useful. Most modifications to the WSDL file can be done when you use the IDE to select features that the wsimport tool or wscompile tool uses to compile your web service. If you tweak a web service's external interface by hand, make sure that you understand the impact of the changes you make.
To tweak the WSDL file by hand:
  1. In the Files window, expand the build folder, then the web folder, then the WEB-INF folder, and then the wsdl folder.
  2. Double-click the WSDL file.

The WSDL file opens in the Source Editor. Note that any changes you make are overwritten when you rebuild the web service, because you are making changes in the build folder. To prevent this, move the WSDL file to the web/WEB-INF/wsdl folder.

  3. Tweak the WSDL file to optimize the external interface of the web service.
