Introduction

The OpenSolaris Common Multiprotocol SCSI TARget, or COMSTAR, is a software framework that enables you to convert any OpenSolaris host into a SCSI target device that can then be accessed over a storage network by initiator hosts. COMSTAR breaks down the large task of handling a SCSI target subsystem into independent functional modules. These modules are then attached to the SCSI Target Mode Framework (STMF).

In Figure 1–1, an OpenSolaris host is configured as a storage array by using COMSTAR. The OpenSolaris host is connected to a storage network and is accessed by initiator hosts. The initiator hosts can be any platform, for example, Solaris 10, Windows, Linux, and VMware ESX.
