You can change the priority of the network connection for all sessions from wired to wireless or from wireless to wired. By default, the network connected to the wired interface becomes active at system startup. Therefore, wired interfaces have higher priority, unless you change the default priority.
This task shows how to change the priority of interfaces at startup from wired to wireless. Alternatively, you can use the task to return the wired interface to highest priority after it is set to a lower priority. You can also use this task to change priorities among the wired interfaces of routers or multihomed hosts.
- Right-click the NWAM Manager Icon.
- Choose the option Edit Network Interface Priorities.
The Network Interface Priority pop-up window is displayed.

The first interface listed has the highest priority at system startup, regardless of whether it is currently active. For example, in the previous window, the wired interface (myk0) is listed first, but it is disabled. The wireless interface (ath0) is listed second, indicating a lower priority. However, that interface is currently enabled. Use the directional arrow buttons on the upper right to change the priority of the selected connection.
- Left-click the network interface whose priority you want to change.
For example, to have the wireless interface active on subsequent startups, left-click the wireless interface entry.
- Left-click the directional arrow buttons to move the interface selection either up or down.
For example, with the wireless network interface highlighted, click the Up arrow to move this entry to the top of the list. Alternatively, you could select the wired
interface entry and then use the Down arrow to lower the priority of the wired network entry.
- Left-click OK for NWAM to accept the changes.
If you have not designated an interface through the Always Choose option on the NWAM Manager Icon menu, your choice of priorities immediately takes affect. Otherwise, your highest priority interface is chosen the next time that the system reboots. In either case, the following occurs:
- If the wireless interface has highest priority, NWAM tries to connect to a wireless network that you previously used at the system's current physical location. If more than one wireless network is available, you are prompted to select a wireless network from the NWAM Manager Icon menu. The system's wired interface is not active even if a network cable is attached to that interface at startup. If you connect a network cable to the wired interface during the session, the wired interface still remains inactive unless you explicitly change to a wired connection. Refer to How to Change the Active Network Connection From a Wireless to a Wired Network for details.
- If the wired interface has highest priority and the wired interface is connected to a network cable, your system automatically connects to the wired network. This action occurs even if the wireless interface was active in the previous session.
- For a system with more than one wired interface, the active interface is the interface that was given highest priority in the previous session.
